The “SS America” was an ocean liner built in 1940 for the United States Lines. She carried many names in the 54 years of her life. She served most notably in passenger service as the “SS America” and as the “SS Australis” for the Greek based shipping company, Chandris. In 1993 the ship was sold again in Thailand. While passing Canary Island of Fuerteventura the vessel beached and broke in two. The ship was declared a total loss on July 1994. Today only a small tip of the bow remains above water.
